Clamshell Packaging Stops Shrinkage

Many people wonder why companies choose to place their products in clamshell packaging, which can be a real burden to open without proper tools. There is even an award, albeit humorous, for the toughest packaging to open. (It’s called the Oyster Award.) The real reason for the difficulty in opening the packaging is twofold – the company allows consumers to see the product they are buying without danger of damage and it reduces the chance of theft. Shoplifting is one of the largest problems facing retailers today, with more than $10 billion per year in losses. These losses, also called shrinkage, will eventually affect customers by making the cost of items increase. Electronics are perhaps the best known types of products to use clamshell packaging, and the reason is often because these are the types of items that many shoplifters have targeted in the past. Specialized tools, similar to box cutters, exist to help consumers open this packaging.
